On October 16, 2024, the Special Secretary of the Federal Revenue of Brazil published Normative Instruction RFB No. 2,229, amending RFB Normative Instruction No. 2,119, initially issued on December 6, 2022. This amendment introduces an alphanumeric format for the National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ), consisting of fourteen positions, with implementation expected to start in July 2026. The instruction aims to enhance the regulatory framework surrounding business identification in Brazil.

A key provision of the new instruction is the immediate suspension of entities or subsidiaries involved in the commercialization, exhibition, storage, custody, or transportation of prohibited products, such as electronic cigarettes and vapes. This measure will be enforced as soon as a violation is identified, particularly during operations targeting smuggling and related crimes. The Normative Instruction will take effect on October 26, 2024, reinforcing the government's commitment to public health and safety.
