Beginning May 20, 2024, new regulations for the sale of tobacco products in Portugal will require a traceability system for all tobacco products, including cigars, heated tobacco, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, hookah tobacco, snuff, and tobacco leaves. This method requires all unit packets to have unique IDs, record their movements across the supply chain, and include a tamper-evident security element to validate authenticity. Economic operators in the tobacco trade must register on the Tobacco Traceability Portal to get the requisite codes for continuous participation in the supply chain, with noncompliance resulting in the inability to conduct associated operations.
