July 16, 2026

On 16 July 2026, the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) issued the Safe Food (Registration and Licensing) Regulations, 2026, establishing a comprehensive registration and licensing framework for food businesses and regulated food products. The regulations entered into force immediately upon publication. The new framework introduces five distinct registration and licensing controls, covering food business operators, food establishments, product manufacturing and import activities, and approvals related to brands and packaging for specified food categories. The applicability of each requirement depends on the nature of the food business activity and product category involved. A key feature of the regulations is the creation of a standalone compliance regime for regulated food activities and special-category products. Upon entry into force, the provisions of the Pure Food Rules, 1967 that address matters covered by the new regulations became inapplicable, marking a significant modernization of Bangladesh's food regulatory framework.
