The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) has published Draft Jordanian Standard DJS 241:2026 (6th Edition) – Rice, establishing updated requirements for the quality, safety, sampling, packaging, and labelling of rice marketed in Jordan. The draft standard would replace JS 241:2015 upon adoption. The proposed standard applies to husked rice, milled rice (aromatic and non-aromatic), and parboiled milled rice intended for human consumption. Quality Specifications: Rice must be clean, sound, wholesome, and free from abnormal odours, insect infestation, visible mould, harmful substances, and other contaminants that could affect product quality or consumer safety. Moisture and Broken Grain Limits: The maximum moisture content is set at 15%, while the proportion of broken grains must not exceed 6%. Contaminant Controls: Heavy metals and other contaminants must comply with the limits established under Codex General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed (CXS 193) and Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915. Pesticide Residues: Maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides must comply with the requirements of Jordanian Standard JS 1925. Microbiological Criteria: The draft includes microbiological specifications, including limits for moulds and the absence of Salmonella in specified sample units. Halal and Hygiene Requirements: Products must comply with Jordanian Standard JS 2060 on halal food requirements and JS 493 on food hygiene practices. Sampling and Testing: Sampling procedures are aligned with ISO 24333, with testing and inspection conducted according to applicable Jordanian and international standards.
