The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has published a draft standard, DUS 2590:2026 – Edible Avocado Oil — Specification, establishing quality, safety, packaging, and labelling requirements for edible avocado oil intended for human consumption. The draft was developed by the UNBS Technical Committee on Oilseeds, Fats and Oils (UNBS/TC 202) and has been released for stakeholder comments prior to potential adoption as a Uganda Standard. 1.Product Classification: The draft standard recognizes several categories of avocado oil, including Extra Virgin, Virgin, Cold Pressed, Refined, and Crude avocado oil. 2.Additive Requirements: Food additives are not permitted in extra virgin, virgin, and cold-pressed avocado oils. Refined avocado oil may contain food additives and flavouring substances in accordance with applicable Codex Alimentarius provisions. 3.Quality Specifications: The standard establishes requirements for physicochemical characteristics, including peroxide value, acid value, moisture and volatile matter content, relative density, saponification value, and fatty acid composition. 4.Contaminant Controls: The draft includes limits for contaminants such as heavy metals and requires compliance with applicable Codex maximum residue limits for pesticides. 5.Packaging and Labelling: Avocado oil must be packaged in food-grade materials that protect product quality. Labels must identify the specific category of avocado oil and comply with general prepackaged food labelling requirements.
