Nutri-Score is a front-of-pack nutrition labeling system developed to help consumers make healthier food choices at a glance. Originating in France and endorsed by several European countries, it assigns food products a color-coded label score ranging from A (dark green) to E (red). The score reflects the overall nutritional quality of a food item, allowing quick comparisons between products in similar categories.

The Nutri-Score is calculated using a scientifically validated algorithm that considers both positive and negative nutritional elements. Negative factors include high calories, sugar, saturated fats, and sodium, while positive attributes include fiber, protein, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. The final score balances these elements.

This system is voluntary in most countries but is increasingly adopted across Europe, especially in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. The European Commission is evaluating its adoption as a mandatory harmonized label across the EU.

For food manufacturers, using the Nutri-Score can enhance transparency and boost brand trust, but it also requires a thorough review of product formulations and labeling strategies. Non-compliance or misrepresentation could lead to Regulatory penalties or consumer backlash.

Freyr supports food businesses that align with Nutri-Score requirements, offering services in nutritional analysis, labeling compliance, and Regulatory consultation to ensure seamless market access and consumer clarity.
