On May 8, 2026, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), part of the California Environmental Protection Agency, announced its intent to list hydrochlorothiazide, voriconazole, and tacrolimus as chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer under Proposition 65, formally known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. The proposed action is being conducted through the “Labor Code” listing mechanism, under which OEHHA determined that the chemicals meet the criteria for listing based on carcinogenic classifications established by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). OEHHA stated that the public comment process is limited to whether IARC sufficiently identified the substances as human or animal carcinogens and does not permit reconsideration of the underlying scientific evidence evaluated by IARC. The public comment period opened on May 8, 2026, and will remain open until June 8, 2026. If finalized, the chemicals would be added to the Proposition 65 list of substances known to cause cancer in California.
