Finnish Authority Confirms Novel Food Status of Mushroom Extract Powders

"The Finnish HA publishes the outcome of different consultations for the novel food status, related to the following ingredients: Extract powder from the fruiting body of Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) - NOT NOVEL Extract powder from the fruiting body of Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) - NOT NOVEL Extract powder from the fruiting body of Maitake (Grifola frondosa) - NOT NOVEL Extract powder from the fruiting body of Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) - NOT NOVEL Extract powder from the fruiting body of Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) - NOT NOVEL ONLY IN SUPPLEMENTS The decision is correct and aligned with our past evaluations. However, one peculiar aspect is that the production/extraction process has been assessed as traditional: the extract powders are produced from the fruiting body of the mushrooms with a method that utilizes both ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) and traditional hot water extraction. Fruiting bodies are dried and ground, extracted with hot water and UAE treated, freeze-dried, and packed. "
