The Government of Canada has released an updated draft assessment and risk management scope for boric acid, its salts, and precursors under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. These substances are proposed to be harmful to human health and the environment due to their presence in products such as toys, DIY materials, cosmetics, cleaning products, and flame retardants. Exposure can occur through air, water, food, and consumer products, with children and males more vulnerable to adverse effects like reproductive and developmental toxicity. Ecologically, concerns were identified near a specific metal processing facility. Proposed actions include regulatory and non-regulatory measures to reduce exposure in consumer products, public education on DIY use, and collaboration with provincial authorities on environmental risks. If confirmed, the substances may be added to Part 2 of Schedule 1 of CEPA, enabling risk management.
A public comment period is open from March 8 to May 7, 2025. Stakeholders are encouraged to review risk management documents and submit feedback via email or the online portal.
