"Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved Proposal P1059, mandating the inclusion of energy (kilojoule) content information on the labels of packaged alcoholic beverages. Currently, alcoholic beverages are not required to display energy content information in a nutrition information panel, unless a nutrition content or health claim is made. This has led to a lack of awareness among consumers regarding the energy content of alcoholic beverages. The decision aims to provide consumers with clearer nutritional information, enabling more informed choices regarding their alcohol consumption. Key Details of the Approval: Implementation Date: The approved variation to the Food Standards Code will come into effect on 7 April 2025. Labelling Requirements: Alcoholic beverages will be required to display energy content information in kilojoules per serving and per 100 millilitres. This information must be presented in a prescribed format on the product label. Scope: The requirement applies to most standardised alcoholic beverages and beverages containing no less than 0.5% alcohol by volume that are not standardised alcoholic beverages."
