"On March 14, 2025, the Republic of Korea notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) under document G/TBT/N/KOR/1266 regarding proposed amendments to its Food Sanitation Act. The key changes focus on the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food products: Mandatory GMO labeling will be required regardless of whether genetically modified DNA or proteins are present in the final product. The threshold for unintended GMO presence will be reduced from 3% to 0.9%. Foods not using genetically modified agricultural, livestock, or fisheries products can be labeled as non-GMO. However, if there is unintended GMO presence, the rate must be indicated, and supporting documentation is required. Regulations will be established for the disposal of products violating GMO or non-GMO labeling standards, as well as for conducting environmental impact surveys related to GMOs. These amendments aim to enhance consumer information and protect public health. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments within 60 days of the notification date"
