"The Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions and Water Management, also responsible for Climate Action and Environment, issued Notification 2025/0762/AT proposing revisions to the certification guidelines for processed foods. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments until March 18, 2026.

Key proposed amendments include:

1. Ingredient and Additive Regulations:
Introduction of a formal definition for “sugars”.
Use of sugar recovered from molasses is permitted, provided it does not exceed 3.5% of total sugar content in the final product.
Use of preservatives, colorants, and flavorings is prohibited.

2. Quality Requirements for Sugar:
Microbiological criteria: Total plate count < 200 CFU/g; Yeast and mold < 10 CFU/g.
Chemical/physical criteria: Reducing sugars ≤ 0.04%; Moisture ≤ 0.06%.
The revisions aim to enhance food safety and standardize ingredient quality for processed foods across Austria, ensuring compliance with both national and EU regulations."
