The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has assumed additional responsibilities under the EUs One Substance, One Assessment (OSOA) package, marking a major step toward a more integrated and efficient chemical safety system in Europe. Working closely with other EU agencies and authorities, ECHA will coordinate efforts to streamline chemical assessments, improve data sharing, and enhance protection of human health and the environment. A central element of the OSOA package is the creation of a common data platform on chemicals. ECHA will manage this platform in cooperation with the European Environment Agency, European Food Safety Authority, European Medicines Agency, and European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, under a governance framework set by the European Commission. The platform will integrate data from multiple sources and function as a one stop shop for chemical monitoring information, reference values, study notifications, regulatory processes, and sustainability related data. In addition, ECHA will develop a monitoring and outlook framework, support early warning and risk identification, generate new data when necessary, and promote the use of scientific research in regulatory decision making. The Agency will also take over tasks previously handled by other bodies, including preparing restriction proposals under the RoHS Directive, setting limits for persistent organic pollutants in waste, and updating guidance for benefit risk assessments of hazardous substances in medical devices.
