On December 16, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released a scientific opinion (Document No. 10.2903) recommending the expansion of permitted uses for the novel food ingredient galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). The proposal includes increasing the allowable addition of GOS in cereals bars (12,500 mg/100g), syrup and whey powder (25,000 mg/100g), fruit and vegetable concentrates (2,100 mg/100g), modified milk (2,000 mg/100g), and chewing gum or gummy candy (10,000 mg/100g). The expansion aims to broaden GOS applications in the food industry while ensuring safety. The approval will become legally binding once published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
