On 27 November 2025, the European Commission released a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to support the implementation of the Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (ECGT). The FAQ provides clarifications on key definitions, scope, and the acceptability of environmental claims under the Directive. The ECGT introduces significant amendments to both the Consumer Rights Directive and the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, aiming to curb greenwashing by prohibiting vague, misleading or unsubstantiated environmental claims. It also clarifies how traders must present sustainability information to ensure transparency and comparability for consumers. The document explains which types of claims—such as “eco-friendly,” “climate neutral,” or claims based solely on offsetting—may be considered deceptive unless supported by verifiable evidence. By offering guidance to businesses, consumer authorities and other stakeholders, the FAQ is intended to facilitate consistent enforcement across the EU. The Directive enters into application on 27 September 2026.
