Japans Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has opened a public consultation on the draft partial revision of the testing methods for new chemical substances. The consultation, published on December 25, 2025, seeks opinions on proposed updates to testing and investigation requirements related to hazard assessment of priority evaluated chemical substances and monitoring chemical substances under relevant ministerial ordinances. The solicitation of opinions is conducted on a voluntary basis rather than under the Administrative Procedure Act. Public comments are being accepted from December 25, 2025, to January 24, 2026. Supporting materials, including a summary paper, draft text, and a comparison table showing old and new provisions, have been released to facilitate stakeholder review. The proposed revisions aim to refine and update testing methodologies used in chemical safety management, ensuring that hazard evaluations remain scientifically appropriate and aligned with regulatory needs. The Chemical Substance Safety Office under METI is responsible for handling inquiries and collecting feedback during the consultation period.
