Switzerland has notified the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade of a draft amendment to its Chemical Risk Reduction Ordinance (ORRChem), issued by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The proposed regulation targets food contact materials, including packaging and single-use consumer goods, by restricting the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Under the draft rules, products placed on the market will be prohibited if they exceed specific PFAS concentration limits in homogeneous materials: 25 ppb for any individual non-polymeric PFAS, 250 ppb for the total sum of non-polymeric PFASs (including those formed from precursor compounds), and 50 ppm for the combined total of non-polymeric and polymeric PFASs. The measure aims to protect human health and the environment from risks associated with these hazardous substances. Adoption is planned for 1 November 2026, with entry into force on 1 December 2026. Comments are accepted until 28 March 2026.
