The WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee has circulated a notification from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda concerning a proposed regional standard for glass containers used in packaging, including bottles, pots, and jars. The responsible agency is the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB). The notified document, titled DEAS 935:2025 Packaging: Code of Practice for Glass Containers, provides detailed guidelines on the manufacture, classification, selection, and proper use of glass containers for packaging purposes. The draft standard aims to improve consumer information and labelling, prevent deceptive practices, ensure health and safety protection, safeguard the environment, and strengthen overall quality requirements. It also seeks to reduce trade barriers, promote regional trade facilitation, and support cost savings and productivity enhancement within the packaging sector. The date of adoption is yet to be determined, and the standard is expected to enter into force six months after adoption. Comments are open until 17 March 2026.
