WTO Update- Tanzania Officially Adopts East African Standard for Machine Wash Detergent Powder

This addendum notification, circulated on 27 January 2026 under the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade, delivers an important update from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. It announces that the Draft East African Standard DEAS 127-2: 2022, titled Synthetic detergent powder — Specification — Part 2: Machine wash (Second Edition), has now been officially adopted by Tanzania. Originally notified through several TBT reference documents, the measure was formally approved on 31 October 2025 and has been incorporated into Tanzania’s national standards framework as TZS 1778-2:2025/EAS 127-2:2022. The adoption represents a significant step toward regional harmonization of technical requirements for machine wash detergent powders, promoting uniform product quality, enhanced consumer protection, and smoother trade within the East African Community.
