The EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) assessed the safety of cannabidiol (CBD) isolated from Cannabis sativa L. for use as a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The novel food consists of ≥97% CBD and is intended for use in food supplements at a maximum intake of 21 mg/day for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women. While the manufacturing process and composition were adequately described, uncertainties remained regarding the intended formulations and the potential presence of small particles, including nanoparticles.
As a result, EFSA could not determine whether the available ADME and toxicological studies were appropriate for the safety assessment. Consequently, the Panel concluded that the safety of the novel food under the proposed conditions of use could not be established.
