The European Commission's Novel Food Catalogue has confirmed that the nuts and oil derived from Macadamia integrifolia Maiden & Betche are not considered novel foods in the European Union. According to information available to EU Member States, these products were consumed to a significant degree within the Union before 15 May 1997, the reference date established under the Novel Food framework. As a result, they do not require pre-market authorization under the Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
The determination applies specifically to the nuts and oil of Macadamia integrifolia, a species belonging to the Proteaceae family.

While the products may be marketed without novel food approval, food business operators should note that other EU or national legislation may still impose restrictions or specific requirements. Companies are therefore advised to consult the competent authorities in the Member States where the products will be placed on the market.
