Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) protein powder is considered a Novel Food for both conventional foods and food supplements in the EU. A Novel Food authorization under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 would be required before marketing the ingredient in either category. Following an Article 4 consultation submitted to the Dutch Novel Food Unit, the product was determined not to have a history of significant consumption in the European Union prior to 15 May 1997.
As a result, peanut protein powder requires pre-market authorization before it can be placed on the EU market as a food ingredient. The clarification highlights that while peanuts themselves have a long history of consumption in the EU, concentrated protein powder derived from peanuts is assessed separately for Novel Food purposes based on its specific form and history of use.
