Japan grants plastic product design certifications to promote recycling and sustainability

On 10 February 2026, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan announced the first-ever design certifications under the Plastic Resource Recycling Promotion Act for plastic-based products. The certification system evaluates products based on reduced plastic usage, recyclability, and environmental impact. A total of 41 product designs were certified across categories such as stationery, PET bottles, cleaning containers, and cosmetic containers. The initiative aims to promote sustainable design, increase the use of recycled materials, and support plastic resource recycling through alignment with green purchasing policies and recycling infrastructure.
