Japan notified the WTO of its decision to lift the import suspension on raw milk and unheated/untreated milk products originating from Hungary. The restriction had been imposed on 7 March 2025 by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) following outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Hungary.

After reviewing Hungary's FMD control and eradication measures, MAFF concluded that the import of raw milk and unheated/untreated milk products from Hungary presents a negligible risk of introducing FMD into Japan. Consequently, imports of such products produced on or after 17 April 2026 are now permitted.

As a result, Japan will withdraw WTO notification G/SPS/N/JPN/1328, and Hungary has been reinstated among the countries recognized under Japan's Animal Health Requirements for Raw Milk and/or Milk Products Exported to Japan from Listed Countries.
