The Swedish Chemicals Agency has extended two exemptions from the national mercury ban for three more years, until 31 December 2028, due to the lack of suitable alternatives. The exemptions cover: (1) the use of mercury compounds in pharmaceutical analyses required by international standards like the European Pharmacopoeia, and (2) mercury use in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) analysis for wastewater and sludge treatment, pending updated EU directive provisions. The extension is formalised through amended regulations (KIFS 2025:1), effective 1 January 2026, while a previous exemption for mercury in medical diagnostic research, which expired in 2023, has been removed.
