The authorities in France have issued an official order on April 17, 2026, renewing the suspension on the importation, introduction, and placing on the market of food supplements containing Garcinia cambogia Desr. The measure, which came into force on April 18, 2026, extends the existing restriction for an additional year as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health.

The decision is based on scientific evaluations conducted by ANSES, which identified potential acute health risks associated with the consumption of Garcinia cambogia extracts. These concerns are primarily linked to hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a key active compound in the plant. The suspension is maintained as a precautionary measure while an EU-level risk assessment of HCA remains ongoing.

Under the renewed order, food business operators are required to ensure that their products and supply chains are fully free from Garcinia cambogia. Companies bear full responsibility for compliance, including any costs related to product withdrawal, recalls, or market restrictions in cases of non-compliance.

The extension reinforces Frances precautionary regulatory approach toward botanicals used in food supplements, particularly where safety uncertainties persist at the European level. The measure remains temporary but may be subject to further review depending on future scientific and regulatory developments within the EU framework.
