On 1 April 2026, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Industrial Safety and Security Group, Chemical Substance Management Division, Chemical Substance Safety Office, Japan. METI announced the designation and cancellation of Priority Assessment Chemical Substances under Article 2, Paragraph 5 of the Act on the Examination and Regulation of Manufacture, etc. of Chemical Substances (Chemical Substances Control Law, Act No. 117 of 1973). As of March 31, 2026, the designation of six substances as Priority Assessment Chemical Substances was revoked. Details are provided in a PDF file (55KB). As of April 1, 2026, six new substances (serial numbers No. 289 to No. 294) were designated as Priority Assessment Chemical Substances. A list of all Priority Assessment Chemical Substances as of April 1, 2026, is also available in PDF format (105KB). METI further provided guidance on the notification of production (manufacture) and import quantities for the cancelled and newly designated substances, based on Articles 8 and 9 of the Chemical Substances Control Law. - For the six substances whose designation was revoked on March 31, 2026 (serial numbers No. 67, 170, 200, 242, 246, 248): They will be treated as general chemical substances. Businesses must notify the 2025 fiscal year actual production/import quantities in fiscal year 2026, and continue as general chemical substances thereafter (unless redesignated). - For the six newly designated substances on April 1, 2026: They will be notified as general chemical substances for the 2025 fiscal year quantities in fiscal year 2026, and as Priority Assessment Chemical Substances from fiscal year 2027 onward. - For substances designated on April 1, 2025 (No. 286-288): Notification as Priority Assessment Chemical Substances begins in fiscal year 2026 As of March 31, 2026, the designation of six substances as Priority Assessment Chemical Substances was revoked. 1.
