The Europe General Data Protection Regulation (EU GPDR) replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and is designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens’ data privacy and to reshape the organizations’ approach towards data privacy. The EU GDPR is the most important change in data privacy regulation in last 20 years. The regulation might reshape the way in which the data is handled across every sector, from healthcare to banking and beyond.

Aim of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

  • To allow European Union (EU) citizens to better control their personal data
  • To modernize and unify rules allowing businesses to reduce red tape and to benefit from greater consumer trust

Citizens’ rights

The GDPR strengthens existing rights, provides new rights and gives citizens more control over their personal data. These include:

  • Easier access to their data
  • A new right to data portability
  • Right to erasure
  • Right to know when their personal data has been hacked

Rules for businesses

The GDPR is designed to create business opportunities and stimulate innovation through several steps including:

  • A single set of EU-wide rules
  • A data protection office EU rules for non-EU companies
  • Privacy-friendly techniques (pseudonymization and encryption)
  • Impact assessments
  • Record-keeping

In case of any data breach, the controller shall notify the supervisory authority about the personal data breach within 72 hours. This will be in accordance with Article 55, unless the personal data breach is unlikely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of natural persons.
