"The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) released the updated restriction proposal for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under REACH, prepared by authorities from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. The update incorporates evaluations of over 5,600 scientific and technical comments submitted during the 2023 consultation. Key developments include: Assessment of eight additional sectors not specified in the original proposal: printing, sealing, machinery, medical packaging/excipients, military, explosives, technical textiles, and broader industrial uses (e.g., solvents, catalysts). Consideration of alternative restriction options, beyond a full ban, allowing controlled use in areas such as PFAS manufacturing, transport, electronics/semiconductors, energy, sealing, machinery, and technical textiles. ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) and Socio-Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC) continue their evaluations. Their independent opinions will inform the European Commission’s final decision, taken in consultation with EU Member States. The initiative aims to reduce PFAS emissions and improve safety of products and processes across the EU/EEA."
