The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is set to launch a public consultation on the draft opinion of its Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) regarding the proposed EU-wide restriction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This consultation is expected to begin after SEAC finalises its draft opinion during its March 2026 meeting and will remain open for 60 days, until May 25, 2026, allowing stakeholders to provide feedback. The consultation will follow a structured online survey format, inviting input from industry, NGOs, researchers, and the public. Participants will be asked to provide data on the socio-economic impacts of restricting PFAS, including costs, benefits, and the availability and feasibility of alternatives across different sectors. Importantly, the consultation focuses only on socio-economic considerations, while risk-related aspects are evaluated separately by ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). Stakeholders are encouraged to prepare in advance, as responses must be submitted directly through the survey system. The feedback gathered will support SEAC in refining its final opinion, expected by the end of 2026. This opinion, together with RAC’s assessment, will inform the European Commission’s decision on whether to adopt the PFAS restriction across the EU.
