On March 24, 2026, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a public consultation on the active substance diuron under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR), focusing on its identification as a potential candidate for substitution and the possible application of derogation conditions. Diuron has been identified as meeting exclusion criteria under the BPR due to its classification as a carcinogenic substance (Category 1A or 1B). As a result, ECHA is seeking information on the availability of safer alternatives and on whether the substance may still qualify for approval under specific derogation conditions, such as essential use or negligible risk scenarios. The consultation covers the use of diuron as a preservative in exterior paint films and building materials to prevent algae growth. Stakeholders are invited to submit scientific data and socio-economic information regarding alternatives and justification for derogations. The consultation period will remain open until May 25, 2026. The outcome will support ECHA’s evaluation and subsequent decision-making on the approval or restriction of diuron under EU biocidal product regulations.
