France's Directorate General for Food (DGAL) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty announced that, starting from May 15, 2026, the sale of cannabidiol (CBD) in food products will be prohibited. The ban covers CBD oils, teas, candies, and other food items containing CBD. CBD products intended for smoking and CBD-containing e-liquids will not be affected.
The authority stated that the measure is intended to enforce EU "novel food" regulations. Under these rules, any food not traditionally consumed within the EU must obtain prior authorization before being marketed. To date, CBD used in food has not received such authorization. France previously applied a more permissive approach but will adopt a strict "zero tolerance" policy from mid-May onward.
