The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced on April 23, 2026, that importers of allulose and allulose-containing processed foods will be required to submit additional documentation starting October 1, 2026.
Effective October 1, 2026 (based on shipment date), all shipments of allulose and processed foods containing the sweetener must be accompanied by either a "Certificate of Approval for Temporary Standards and Specifications for Foods" or a "Notification of Safety Review Results for Genetically Modified Foods, etc."
The new measure, rooted in MFDS Notification No. 2026-1 (Jan. 13, 2026), mandates that the specific microorganisms and enzyme preparations used to manufacture allulose—typically through alkalization or enzymatic treatment of fructose—must have formal government recognition. Importers are advised to secure the necessary approvals from the relevant divisions (Microbiology, Additives, or Manufacturing Standards) prior to shipping goods to South Korea after the deadline.
