"Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved an amendment to Schedule 26 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code to permit the sale and use of food derived from genetically modified (GM) tomato lines containing event Del/Ros1-N, known as the GM Purple Tomato. These tomatoes have been modified to produce high levels of natural anthocyanins, giving them purple skin and flesh.

A comprehensive safety assessment conducted by FSANZ found no public health or safety concerns, confirming that the GM Purple Tomato is as safe as conventional tomato varieties. Existing GM food labelling rules will apply, requiring products from these tomato lines to be labelled as ""genetically modified"", regardless of whether novel DNA or protein is detectable.

FSANZ opened public consultation on 30 July 2025 and received 32 submissions, which were taken into account before finalizing the amendment. The approved variation adds a new entry for “tomato lines containing event Del/Ros1-N” to Schedule 26, thereby officially permitting their sale and use in Australia and New Zealand."
