"The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has released a draft of the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations, 2025. Key Proposed Amendments (with numerical values)
1. Sparkling Wine (Brut Category) – Regulation 3.1.2.2
A modification is proposed to redefine the sugar content for Brut sparkling wines:
Current requirement: below 1.2% sugar
Proposed addition: a tolerance of 0.3% will now be allowed.
This change aims to align product specifications with international industry standards.
2. Wine-Based Beverages – Regulation 3.1.6
FSSAI proposes deletion of the words:
“or special wine used”
This change is intended to clarify compositional requirements and prevent ambiguity in classification of wine-based beverages.
3. Labelling of Standard Drink – Regulation 5.2
A significant change is proposed in the labeling requirement:
The word “may” will be substituted with “shall”,
making standard drink labeling mandatory, not optional.
This aims to enhance consumer awareness regarding alcohol units in beverages.
