"Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Finance announced the start of a joint investigation into the possible imposition of unfair tariffs on bisphenol A (BPA) originating from the Republic of Korea and from Taiwan’s independent customs territories (Penghu Islands, Kinmen, and Matsu). The investigation follows applications submitted on 2 June 2025 by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Mitsui Chemicals Co., Ltd., requesting tariffs under relevant trade laws. Bisphenol A, typically a white granular or powdery solid, is mainly used in the production of polycarbonate resins and epoxy resins. The investigation expected to conclude within one year, will gather evidence from stakeholders and conduct fact-finding surveys of affected companies in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. Based on the findings, the government will determine whether imports at unfairly low prices are causing or threatening substantial injury to Japanese industry and whether WTO-consistent unfair tariffs should be imposed."
