"The Ministry of Health Malaysia, through its Food Safety & Quality Programme, has issued a notification (G/TBT/N/MYS/1286) under the Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) regarding proposed updates to the Twelfth A Schedule of the Food Regulations 1985 [P.U. (A) 437/1985].
The proposed amendments focus on probiotic labelling and include:
Updating the globally recognized designation of Lactobacillus casei Shirota to Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Shirota, reflecting recent taxonomic revisions.
Adding a new probiotic strain, Lactobacillus plantarum 299v / Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v, under the Lactobacillus group.
The initiative aims to enhance consumer awareness, labelling accuracy, and protection of human health and safety. The amendments cover all food products (ICS: 67).
The proposed regulations are set to take effect six months after publication, with the deadline for public comments on the draft set for 5 December 2025"
