"Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) parliamentarian Matías Sotomayor has introduced a draft Regional Front-of-Pack Labeling (FOPL) Law (Protocol 000358/2025). The proposal seeks to harmonize nutritional warning labels across member states, requiring clear front-of-pack symbols that alert consumers when packaged foods contain excessive sugars, saturated fats, sodium, or calories.
The initiative is supported by the Latin American and Caribbean Community of Practice in Nutrition and Health (COLANSA), academic institutions, and civil society organizations, all of which contributed scientific evidence and public-health principles to the draft. The objective is to strengthen regional protection against diet-related diseases, promote healthier food environments, and give consumers simple, visible tools to identify products that may pose health risks."
