Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) of New Zealand circulated a notification (G/SPS/N/NZL/786) under the Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) regarding proposed amendments to the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for agricultural compounds. These amendments are designed to ensure food safety, harmonize regulations with Codex international standards, and facilitate trade.
Key proposals include amendments to existing MRL entries for several compounds and commodities:
Dicamba: New MRLs set at 0.01(*) mg/kg in eggs, 0.02 mg/kg in poultry meat, 0.04 mg/kg in poultry fat, and 0.07 mg/kg in poultry offal.
Lasalocid (revised to lasalocid sodium): Marker residue definition updated to ‘Lasalocid A’. MRLs removed for eggs and poultry offal, with new MRLs established across cattle, goat, and poultry tissues (e.g., 0.1 mg/kg in cattle liver, 1.2 mg/kg in poultry liver, 0.005(*) mg/kg in milk).
Myclobutanil, Proquinazid, Quinoxifen, Trifloxystrobin: Reference crops updated from “cucurbits (inedible peel)” or “cucurbits (edible peel)” to specific Codex crop groupings (11A or 11B) such as “Cucurbits – Melons, Pumpkins, and Winter Squashes” and “Cucumbers and Summer Squashes.”
(*) indicates the MRL is set at or near the limit of analytical quantification.
Additionally, MPI proposed removal of MRL entries for Hydrocortisone aceponate, due to the absence of a specific analytical method, and the addition of a new entry in Schedule 3 for veterinary medicines with no MRL, specifically ethanol when used in a dairy animal teat wipe.
