The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced that the Republic of Korea played a leading role at the 56th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA56), held from 13–17 April 2026 in Chongqing, with participation from 272 delegates representing 64 member countries and international organizations including the World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization.
During the session, Korea actively contributed to discussions on:
new and revised General Standards for Food Additives;
priority lists for safety evaluations by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA);
revisions to the International Numbering System (INS); and
development of safety assessment guidelines for cell culture media components used in cell-based foods.
MFDS highlighted that Korea co-chaired the electronic working group responsible for developing international guidelines for the safety assessment of cell culture media components used in cell-based food production, reinforcing the country’s role in shaping emerging global food safety standards.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission, established jointly by FAO and WHO in 1962, develops international food standards aimed at facilitating trade and protecting consumer health, while JECFA conducts scientific safety evaluations for food additives, contaminants and veterinary drug residues and establishes health-based guidance values such as Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI).
