"Sri Lanka has proposed revisions to its draft technical standards for fortified rice production operations, strengthening regulatory oversight of the country’s food fortification program. The updated draft outlines stricter requirements for processing practices, hygiene controls, blending techniques, and nutrient fortification levels to ensure that fortified rice consistently delivers intended nutritional benefits without compromising food safety or quality.
Fortification Process:
Fortificant Premix (FRK) suppliers must provide test reports from accredited laboratories.
Physical properties (color/density) of FRK must match the base rice for blending.
Packaging:
Limited to virgin PP/LDPE food-grade barrier packaging (moisture/rodent-resistant).
Vacuum-sealed with inert gases (nitrogen/carbon dioxide).
Labels must use non-toxic inks and comply with SLS 1804; single package ≤10 kg.
Storage Conditions:
Temperature ≤25°C, humidity <60%, protected from light and wall-distance storage.
Wooden pallets prohibited (unless treated for pest resistance).
Personnel Management:
""Four Prohibitions"" in production areas (no smoking, eating, drinking, or spitting).
Annual training on GMP and food safety (records retained ≥2 years).
Strict 1:99 blending ratio with a coefficient of variation (CV%) ≤15% (daily calibration of weighing equipment required).
Parameters such as blending time and rotation speed must be recorded.
