"TGA has announced new safety controls for products containing Vitamin B6.
Products with ≤ 50 mg B6/day remain freely available
Products with > 50 mg and ≤ 200 mg/day will be available only with a pharmacist’s advice.
Products with > 200 mg/day will require a doctor’s prescription.
Reasons for the change:
Low deficiency rates: Vitamin B6 deficiency is uncommon in Australia. Most adults need only 1.1–1.7 mg/day, and deficiency typically occurs only in higher-risk groups (e.g., elderly, alcohol dependence, obesity, certain kidney/liver/autoimmune conditions).
Risk–benefit balance: The new controls strike a balance between allowing access to low-dose supplementation where needed and limiting exposure to higher doses that offer little additional benefit.
Safety concerns: Long-term use of high-dose vitamin B6 has been linked to peripheral nerve damage, and the changes aim to reduce this risk.
The new rules come into effect from 1 June 2027."
