The Food Supplements Purity Criteria (Magnesium L-threonate monohydrate) (England) Regulations 2026 has been laid before Parliament, establishing specific purity standards for magnesium L-threonate monohydrate as a permitted source of magnesium in food supplements. The regulation, expected to come into force on 13 August 2026 (subject to approval), defines detailed compositional and contaminant limits, includiang assay ranges for magnesium (7.28.3%) and L-threonate (8291%), along with strict thresholds for heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury.
Developed under the framework of the Nutrition (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019, the draft follows public consultation in line with Regulation (EC) No 178/2002. While no significant economic impact is anticipated, the measure provides regulatory clarity for manufacturers using this novel magnesium source, ensuring product quality and consumer safety within the England market.
