On 7 November 2025, the WTO circulated the Draft East African Standard DEAS 126:2021 (Second Edition) on Petroleum Jelly for Cosmetic Use to its Members. The standard harmonizes quality and safety requirements across the East African Community (EAC)—Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda—for cosmetic-grade petroleum jelly (excluding industrial uses). It defines general and specific quality criteria, allowable additives, contaminant limits (heavy metals and microbiological), and detailed analytical test methods. The aim is to streamline regional trade, enhance consumer safety, and remove technical barriers by aligning testing procedures and specifications. The updated standard entered into force in Uganda on 11 July 2025, supporting uniform regulatory compliance and product reliability across the EAC.
