On June 3, 2026, the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) announced the availability of a new self-guided Research and Development (R&D) categorisation tool designed to assist chemical importers, manufacturers, and suppliers in determining whether proposed industrial chemical introductions qualify for the R&D exempted or R&D reported categories under Australia's industrial chemicals regulatory framework. The online decision tool uses a questionnaire-based approach to assess whether a proposed introduction meets the eligibility criteria for the R&D exempted (very low risk) or R&D reported (low risk) categories. It also provides users with immediate feedback if an introduction does not qualify for either category and directs them to the appropriate next steps for compliance. The tool is intended for new chemical introductions and does not apply to chemicals already listed on the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals, which remain subject to existing categorisation guidance. The initiative aims to simplify regulatory decision-making, improve compliance, and support innovation by providing industry stakeholders with a streamlined mechanism for determining the appropriate regulatory pathway for research and development activities involving industrial chemicals.
