The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published the latest update of its Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) list, a harmonised framework used to support the safety assessment of microorganisms intentionally added to the food and feed chain. Microorganisms granted QPS status may benefit from a simplified safety assessment during the authorisation process, although product-specific assessments may still be required. Following assessment, EFSA recommended the inclusion of the following microorganisms in the QPS list: 1.Lactococcus cremoris 2.Companilactobacillus pabuli 3.Heyndrickxia faecalis 4.Ensifer adhaerens The following microorganisms were not recommended due to identified safety concerns and have been excluded from future QPS assessments: 1.Enterococcus lactis 2.Listeria innocua 3.Bacillus thuringiensis 4.Pseudomonas protegens EFSA also concluded that the available scientific evidence was insufficient to support QPS status for: 1.Microbacterium foliorum 2.Papiliotrema terrestris 3.Hyphomicrobium denitrificans These microorganisms were not recommended because the current body of knowledge was considered inadequate for a QPS evaluation. Such microorganisms may be reassessed in the future if additional scientific data become available
