The European Commission has adopted Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1427, authorising enzymatically produced egg membrane hydrolysate as a novel food and adding it to the Union list of authorised novel foods under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470. The Regulation enters into force on 23 July 2026. The novel food is authorised for use in food supplements as defined in Directive 2002/46/EC, intended for the general adult population, excluding pregnant and lactating women and individuals under 18 years of age. The maximum daily intake is set at 500 mg/day. Products containing the novel food must be labelled as “egg membrane hydrolysate” and include a statement that the supplement should not be consumed by persons under 18 years of age, pregnant women, or breastfeeding women. As the ingredient is derived from eggs, allergen labelling requirements under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 apply. The authorisation is based on proprietary scientific data submitted by Eggnovo SL, which has been granted five years of data protection. Consequently, only the company may place the novel food on the EU market until 23 July 2031, unless a subsequent applicant obtains authorisation based on independently generated data.
