On May 25, 2026, European Chemicals Agency updated the status of the harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) proposal for melamine under the European Union CLP framework. The proposal, submitted by Germany, remains under “Opinion Development” within the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) process. The dossier proposes revising the harmonised classification of melamine to include Reproductive Toxicity Category 2 (H361fd), while maintaining existing classifications for Carcinogenicity Category 2 (H351) and Specific Target Organ Toxicity Repeated Exposure Category 2 (H373). The proposal also introduces PMT (Persistent, Mobile and Toxic) and vPvM (very Persistent and very Mobile) hazard designations with supplemental hazard statements EUH450 and EUH451. The public consultation period on reproductive toxicity and PMT/vPvM hazard classes opened on February 16, 2026 and closed on April 17, 2026. RAC is required to adopt its opinion by July 15, 2027 under the CLH procedure established by the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation
