The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) announced the implementation of changes to the Great Britain Classification, Labelling and Packaging (GB CLP) Regulation following the entry into force of the Chemicals (Health and Safety) (Amendment, Consequential and Transitional Provision) Regulations 2026. The amendments introduce significant updates to chemical classification and labelling requirements in Great Britain and aim to streamline regulatory processes while maintaining high standards of chemical safety. One of the key changes is the removal of the requirement for manufacturers, importers, and certain suppliers placing substances on the Great Britain market to notify HSE of classification and labelling information. From 21 May 2026, new or updated notifications are no longer required for substances marketed in Great Britain. However, businesses placing substances on the market in Northern Ireland must continue to comply with notification requirements under the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) Classification and Labelling Inventory. The amendments also transfer technical notes previously contained in Annex VI of the GB CLP Regulation into the Great Britain Mandatory Classification and Labelling (GB MCL) List, enabling HSE to update these notes more efficiently.
