On May 8, 2026, the European Commission (EC) launched a public consultation on a draft regulation aimed at restricting substances classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction (CMR) in childcare articles. The proposed measure seeks to strengthen child safety by limiting exposure to hazardous chemicals that may be present in products intended to facilitate children’s sleep, relaxation, hygiene, feeding, or sucking activities. The initiative forms part of the European Union’s broader efforts to enhance consumer protection and chemical safety within the single market. The draft regulation and annex were published for stakeholder feedback from May 8, 2026, to June 5, 2026. Comments submitted during the consultation period will be considered by the Commission in the finalization of the measure. The initiative is expected to be adopted as a regulation following completion of the legislative process. The restriction is intended to reduce health risks associated with children’s exposure to CMR substances in consumer products and to support harmonized chemical safety standards across the European Union.
